Credit Problem

I walked through a small downtown area today.

We went in several shops and on TWO different occasions were denied the ability pay with a debit/credit card without a minimum purchase. One store told us they didn't accept debit/credit cards at all.

The owner complained to me that the credit card company charged them and it took away from their profits. So, instead of taking a loss in profit they turned me away completely.....making absolutely no profit.

What is the logic in this? Doesn't it make more sense to loose some profit, but still make a sell?

Not only that, but who carries ONLY cash these days? Independent stores that are struggling to stay open as it is, need to be smarter. Some customers (paying with debit/credit) is better than no customers at all.

It's in the ballpark of a 20 cent fee for retailers to run a debit transaction, and a little less for a credit - the stores are just trying to milk all the money they can get out of it. I went to a chinese restaurant the other day and was charged 75 cents to use a debit card, something I didn't realize until after I had already paid. Ridiculous.

I actually work at a place where we don't have debit/credit. We do lose some customers, but in the long run the services we provide are proven to still stand strong and the people that know who we are know to spread the name among their friends. Also due to this I also usually only carry cash when I go out places.
