Dunkin Battles Starbucks

Does it surprise you that Dunkin Donuts beat Starbucks in a national blind coffee taste test?

I’m not shocked at all. Fundamentally speaking – Dunkin has better tasting good ole fashion coffee.

However, there is one small claim (here) that Dunkin is making that I don’t necessarily agree with: "It's just more proof that it's all about the coffee, not the couches or music."

In fact, with Starbucks it's all about the couches and the music. Yes - Dunkin coffee is better. However when it comes down to making a decision (if price wasn't a factor) I would ALWAYS take service, atmosphere and the way the restaurant makes me feel over taste any day.

Dunkin wins on taste.

Starbucks wins on experience.

Now the bigger question? What sells more coffee? Taste or Experience?

Interesting. Of course, here in Canada, we have Tim Hortons, which I believe is the leader in the category. What a concept if the two were actually COMBINED!!??: ie. Taste AND Experience! Now THAT would be a concept... :) People here go to 'Timmies' as it's affectionately called, I think, to be part of a larger Canadiana feeling...like if you're a true Canadian, you go to 'Timmies'. Is the coffee great? Ehh, it's OK. I actually enjoy the coffee of a smaller time player called Coffee Time better, but you don't get that patriotic feeling there. I suspect it's the same with Americans and Dunkin Donuts. I think Starbuck's has lost its way and it's hard to get back. Plus I think that Dunkin's price point is right for Americans and appeals more to America's "main street' pocketbooks. My hunch is that Starbucks is more popular in larger urban pockets whereas Dunkin hits more residential/suburban areas, of which I think there are more of.
